After reading, for the second time, about the rape at the University of Virginia from an article in Rolling Stones Magazine, I am again heartbroken and slowly losing faith in humanity. From the time my son has been born, he has been wearing UVA colors proudly. Even at the age of 10, he has the brains to make it to the prestigious school. 3 family members have already graduated from the University. I have pride in thinking my son would attend there. Until now.
I am saddened by the lack of protocols in place for RAPE Prevention. I think I am even more upset by the comments from people. People that comment that she just has an ax to grind should be ashamed of themselves. That is someone's daughter, someone's sister. Look at your own personal life and see if you could live with someone doing that to your daughter? Could you turn the other cheek? Could you tell her to pretend it never happened?
The saying goes "It's not the lie, it's the coverup". I feel like the administration should be held accountable for not taking the proper precautions. Also, not reprimanding students. I feel like no matter what you teach these women, there is still situations that it still happens. Why should these women live the rest of their lives in fear, while the men who did this to them get to continue their lives uninterrupted.
Why can't the university that houses the smartest people in the world not be able to implement laws and statutes and procedures that will make life difficult for the rapists to continue. There is not any repercussions for their actions therefore there is no reason to stop.
Lets also talk about the morals these young men have that they would want to make people or participate themselves in such an act as gang rape? What type of men are we raising? When did society decide that gang raping a teenage girl in a frat house was something to put on your bucket list? So many people have a problem with child molesters. They have an idea of what kind of punishment they should get. What is the difference between a child molester and a rapist? To me, there is none. One is just as bad as the other.
RAISE YOUR BOYS TO BE REAL MEN!
